Chemical Toxicities and Heavy Metal Toxicities: Two Barriers That May Be Overlooked

  • Fabiola Reyes-Kimball
  • Blog, Featured Articles, Nutrition Response Testing

When people think about improving their health, they usually start with food.

They eliminate sugar, choose healthier ingredients, drink more water, or start taking supplements.

And while nutrition is incredibly important, there’s something else I want people to consider.

What about the substances your body encounters every day?

Think about the products you use in your home, what you put on your skin, the water you drink, and the environments where you spend your time.
These exposures are all part of your health history.

At Nutritional Wellness Center, Chemical Toxicities and Heavy Metal Toxicities are two of the Five Main Barriers to Healing we explore through Nutrition Response Testing®.

Understanding environmental stressors is an important part of our approach to personalized nutritional wellness.

Chemical Toxicities: Why Your Environment Matters

Every day, we encounter chemicals from both natural and manufactured sources.

Some are essential or harmless at normal exposure levels. Others can interfere with biological processes when exposure reaches harmful levels.

Certain environmental chemicals can affect the nervous system, hormone signaling, metabolism, and other physiological functions.

And while the body has remarkable systems for processing and eliminating many substances, the health effects of toxic exposures depend on the particular chemical, amount, duration, and route of exposure.

This is why I encourage people to become more aware of their environments.

Potential sources of concern may include certain pesticides, solvents, industrial chemicals, contaminated water, and unsafe use of household products.
We don’t need to live in fear of everything around us.

But understanding specific exposures can help us make more informed choices.

How Chemicals Can Affect Normal Body Function

Your body is constantly working to maintain normal physiological function.

The liver helps metabolize many substances, while the kidneys play a major role in filtering blood and eliminating waste.
These processes depend on many enzymes, proteins, and nutrients.

Certain toxic exposures can interfere with normal cellular function, including processes involved in energy production and metabolism.
Some substances can also affect neurological or endocrine function.

That’s why environmental health is worth discussing when reviewing someone’s overall history.

For me, it isn’t about assuming every symptom comes from chemicals.

It’s about understanding which factors deserve attention and how they fit into a personalized wellness plan.

Heavy Metal Toxicities: A Separate Barrier to Healing

Heavy Metal Toxicities are another category within our Nutrition Response Testing® framework.

Metals such as lead and mercury can affect health when exposure reaches toxic levels.

Depending on the substance, toxic exposure can affect neurological function, kidney function, and other organs.

Some metals may accumulate in certain body tissues, making a person’s exposure history important.

Possible exposure sources include contaminated environments, certain occupations, hobbies, older building materials, and some consumer products.

People sometimes come into our office concerned about fatigue, brain fog, or other symptoms and wonder whether heavy metals could be involved.

These concerns deserve thoughtful investigation, but symptoms alone cannot establish metal toxicity.

If someone has a specific exposure concern, medical evaluation and appropriate testing are important.

Within NWC’s nutritional wellness approach, we also discuss environmental factors and consider how a person’s nutritional needs may be supported.
Why I Don’t Recommend Guessing With Detox Programs

I see so much information online about detoxification.

One product promises to remove heavy metals. Another claims to cleanse the liver. Someone else recommends taking several supplements at once.

And I understand why people become interested in these programs, especially when they’ve been struggling with their health.

But I always encourage a thoughtful approach.

Taking more supplements doesn’t necessarily mean you’re giving your body what it needs.

An aggressive detoxification program may be inappropriate, especially when the substance of concern hasn’t been identified.

This is one reason we focus on individualized nutritional recommendations instead of simply following whatever happens to be popular online.

How We Use Nutrition Response Testing®

At Nutritional Wellness Center, Nutrition Response Testing® is central to our personalized wellness process.

We use the assessment to explore potential stressors within our five-barrier framework, including Chemical Toxicities and Heavy Metal Toxicities.

The process involves evaluating muscle responses while the practitioner contacts selected areas of the body.

Within the Nutrition Response Testing® system, these responses are interpreted as indications of stress and used to help prioritize nutritional support.

We also consider the client’s health history, eating habits, lifestyle, and known environmental exposure concerns.

From there, we create an individualized program using targeted dietary recommendations, whole-food nutritional supplements, and lifestyle changes.

For suspected poisoning, conventional medical testing remains necessary to determine whether a toxic exposure has occurred and what treatment is appropriate.

Supporting the Body’s Natural Processes

Your body has several mechanisms for processing and eliminating substances.

The liver transforms many compounds so they can be handled and eliminated more effectively.

The kidneys help filter waste products from the blood.

The digestive system contributes to elimination, while the lungs also remove certain substances.

Adequate nutrition supports the normal functioning of these systems.

Protein, vitamins, minerals, and a varied, nutrient-rich diet all play important roles in maintaining physiological processes.

At NWC, we focus on nutritional recommendations that make sense for the person rather than assuming everyone needs the same products or dietary changes.
We may recommend whole-food nutritional supplementation or specific dietary adjustments based on our assessment framework and the person’s circumstances.
The goal is to support normal body function through a targeted, manageable program.

Why the Sequence Matters

One of the things I often explain to my clients is that we don’t want to overwhelm them with too many changes at once.

I like to compare our approach to opening a combination lock.

You need the right numbers in the right order.

In our Nutrition Response Testing® process, we prioritize areas of nutritional support and reassess at follow-up visits.

As the client’s needs change, we may adjust the dietary recommendations, supplementation, or lifestyle guidance.

We want to create a program that is manageable and appropriate rather than asking someone to make every possible change overnight.

That’s an important part of personalized care.

Practical Ways to Reduce Unnecessary Exposures

There are also simple choices you can make at home.

You don’t need to throw away every product in your house.

Instead, consider:

Following safety instructions when using household cleaning products.

Improving ventilation when using products that produce fumes.

Avoiding unnecessary contact with pesticides and industrial chemicals.

Checking local guidance when there are concerns about drinking water quality.

Using appropriate protective equipment around workplace hazards.

Investigating potential sources of lead or other metals when there is a known reason for concern.

I encourage people to focus on practical changes supported by reliable information.

Small, thoughtful decisions are often easier to sustain than a complete lifestyle overhaul.

Your Environment Is Part of Your Health Story

Something I’ve learned over the years is that you can’t understand someone’s wellness needs by looking at just one aspect of their life.

Food matters.

Sleep matters.

Stress matters.

And environmental exposures can matter, too.

Chemical Toxicities and Heavy Metal Toxicities are two of the five categories we explore because they are part of our larger framework for understanding potential barriers to healing.

Our goal is to bring these considerations together and develop a targeted nutritional support plan based on the individual.
