Immune Challenges, Scars, and the Nervous System: Why Your Health History Matters

  • Fabiola Reyes-Kimball

Have you ever gotten sick and felt like you never quite bounced back?

Maybe your energy hasn’t returned, your sleep feels different, or you just don’t feel like yourself anymore.

Or perhaps you’ve had an old injury or surgery that you rarely think about, because it happened so many years ago.

One thing I’ve learned from working with clients is that your health history matters, including things you might never think to mention.

At Nutritional Wellness Center, we focus on identifying potential barriers to healing through our Nutrition Response Testing® framework.

Two categories that people often know very little about are Immune Challenges and Scars.

And because the nervous system is involved in so many aspects of normal body function, we also pay close attention to stress and nervous system regulation.

Immune Challenges: When You Haven’t Felt the Same Since Being Sick

I hear this more often than you might think.

Someone comes into my office and says, “Sophie, I got sick a while ago, and I’ve never really felt like myself since.”

Maybe they’re still tired, experiencing brain fog, or struggling to return to their usual routine.

Sometimes they feel like they’re doing all the right things, but their energy never seems to return.

There can be several reasons someone experiences lingering symptoms after an illness.

Immune responses can affect the entire body, and recovery isn’t always the same for everyone.

Persistent symptoms don’t necessarily mean an infection is still active, but they deserve to be taken seriously.

At NWC, Immune Challenges are one of the Five Main Barriers to Healing we explore through Nutrition Response Testing®.

Within our framework, this category includes consideration of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other immune-related stressors.

Our focus is on understanding the person’s history and supporting their nutritional needs.

The Connection Between Nutrition and Immune Function

Your immune system relies on many different nutrients to function normally.

Protein is needed for the production of immune-related structures and proteins.

Vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, and D and minerals such as zinc, contribute to normal immune function.

Adequate energy intake, sleep, and overall nutritional status also play important roles.

When someone comes to us after a period of illness or prolonged stress, we want to understand whether they’re eating adequately, how their routines have changed, and what nutritional support may be appropriate.

Through Nutrition Response Testing®, we explore Immune Challenges within our wellness framework and use the assessment to help guide our individualized nutritional recommendations.

We reassess at follow-up appointments and adjust the program as needed.

For clients with symptoms suggesting an ongoing infection or another medical condition, appropriate medical assessment is also important.

Scars: One of the Most Overlooked Barriers in Our Framework

This is something that surprises many of my clients.

During an assessment, I ask about old injuries, surgeries, C-sections, and scars.

And sometimes someone looks at me and says, “But Sophie, that happened 20 years ago. Why would it matter now?”

It’s a good question.

When the body experiences an injury or surgery, it repairs damaged tissue through a process that may produce scar tissue.
Most scars are a normal part of healing.

However, scar tissue can sometimes affect nearby nerves, sensation, and the mobility of surrounding tissues.

Some people experience ongoing tightness, tenderness, or sensitivity around a scar long after the original injury.

That’s one reason previous surgeries and injuries are worth including in a complete health history.

Within Nutrition Response Testing®, we also consider scars as one of the five potential barriers to healing.

Scars and Nervous System Communication

Your skin contains an extensive network of sensory nerves that communicate with your brain and spinal cord.

When tissue is injured, nerve endings and surrounding structures may also be affected.

During healing, some people experience changes in local sensation or sensitivity.

Our Nutrition Response Testing® approach includes a concept known as a neurological interference field.

Within this framework, certain scars are believed to create patterns of nervous system interference.

I sometimes compare this idea to a phone line with a kink in it.

The connection is still there, but the signal may not be functioning the way we’d expect.

This is an analogy used within our wellness framework. The broader theory that a scar can disrupt communication with distant organs has not been scientifically established.

What matters in our assessment is that we don’t overlook someone’s history.

How We Assess Scars Through Nutrition Response Testing®

Nutrition Response Testing® uses a non-invasive muscle-testing process.

During the assessment, we evaluate responses while contacting selected areas of the body.

Scars may be included among the areas considered within this framework.

When a scar produces a response interpreted as relevant within the Nutrition Response Testing® system, we take that information into account when developing the client’s personalized program.

We also discuss the person’s history of injuries, surgeries, and any current discomfort.

The goal is to consider the complete picture rather than focusing exclusively on the most recent symptom.

Nutritional Support and Scar Care

Our scar education materials discuss approaches involving topical wheat germ oil, sesame seed oil, and low-level light therapy, sometimes called cold laser therapy.

These approaches are described in the context of addressing scars within the Nutrition Response Testing® framework.

There is a distinction between supporting local scar comfort and claiming that a treatment corrects nerve interference affecting distant organs.

The effectiveness of the specific oil and light therapy protocol for resolving the proposed interference fields has not been established.

When evaluating someone’s needs, we consider what approaches are appropriate for the individual and which services are available through the practice.

Our broader nutritional wellness programs may also include targeted dietary guidance, whole-food supplements, and lifestyle recommendations.

As with the other barriers, we reassess and make adjustments as the client progresses.

Why the Nervous System Is So Important

Your nervous system helps coordinate many functions throughout your body.

It influences heart rate, breathing, digestion, and your response to stress.

One important part of this system is the autonomic nervous system.

The sympathetic branch helps prepare the body to respond to demands, while the parasympathetic branch supports processes associated with rest and digestion.
Both are necessary.

The goal isn’t to eliminate stress or remain relaxed every moment.

It’s to support healthy adaptability and recovery.

Understanding Heart Rate Variability

At Nutritional Wellness Center, we use Nerve Express Heart Rate Variability analysis as another way to learn about autonomic nervous system patterns.
Heart Rate Variability, commonly called HRV, refers to the variation in time between individual heartbeats.

Although your heart may beat at a relatively steady rate, the intervals between beats naturally vary.

Those variations are influenced by autonomic nervous system activity, breathing, sleep, physical activity, and other physiological factors.
HRV can provide additional information about patterns associated with stress and recovery.

It doesn’t identify the five barriers, but it offers another perspective when we’re discussing a client’s overall wellness.

This information can help support conversations about stress management, sleep habits, and appropriate lifestyle changes.

Why We Look at the Whole Person

One of the things I love most about working with clients is getting to know their stories.

Sometimes people have been struggling for years.

They’ve tried different diets, supplements, and wellness approaches, but they still don’t feel the way they want to feel.
And often, they have questions that haven’t been fully explored.

At Nutritional Wellness Center, we take the time to learn about the person, including their nutrition, lifestyle, health history, and wellness goals.

Through Nutrition Response Testing®, we explore the Five Main Barriers to Healing:

Food Sensitivities
Chemical Toxicities
Heavy Metal Toxicities
Immune Challenges
Scars

We use the framework to develop individualized nutritional support programs and reassess as clients move forward.

Our work focuses on targeted dietary recommendations, whole-food supplementation, and lifestyle changes intended to support normal body function.
Sometimes Progress Starts With Asking Different Questions

I believe one of the most important things we can offer someone is the opportunity to be heard.

You are more than a list of symptoms.

Your health history matters.

Your nutritional needs matter.

And your goals matter.

If you’ve been searching for a more personalized approach to wellness, we’d love to learn more.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

If you’ve been struggling with your health and feel like you’ve tried everything, we’d love to hear your story.

At Nutritional Wellness Center, we focus on identifying potential barriers to healing and developing personalized nutritional programs to help you move forward.

Educational note: Nutrition Response Testing® is a complementary, non-diagnostic assessment. It has not been scientifically established as a reliable diagnostic method for detecting infections, scar-related neurological interference, or organ dysfunction. HRV provides information about autonomic activity but cannot diagnose these conditions or the five barriers. Individual results vary.
